Bike To Work/School Week

Saturday May 14 - Friday May 20

Bike to Work/School Week 2011 was a huge success in the Truckee Meadows! Even with the snow fall and freezing temperatures 860 riders registered for the event. Estimated benefits to our community and environment include*:

$2,716 saved through lower commute costs
193,500 calories or 35 lbs of fat burned
200 lbs of carbon monoxide and 8,095 lbs of carbon dioxide emissions eliminated.

If you registered for the event, please complete this very quick survey to help us with next year’s event! (Even if you ended up not riding because of the weather, we want your input) http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/B2Wfollowup

Congratulations to the following businesses for winning the Commuter Challenge by encouraging the greatest percentage of employees to commute to work by bicycle in their respective size category:

Fehr & Peers & Dresslerville Head Start (tie)
Dilworth Middle School
REI (Recreational Equipment Inc.)
Server Technology
Sierra Nevada Corporation
International Game Technology - IGT

Studies indicate that employees with active life styles are more productive and have lower health care costs and fewer absences from work.

Congratulations to Mary Ohren our grand prize winner!

Bike to School Week students registered from 20 local elementary, middle and high schools. Biking to school is a great way to introduce children to the joys of bicycling in a safe environment.

Many thanks to everyone that participated and all the businesses, including the local bike shops and coffee shops that offered riding incentives in support of cycling to work and school.

A limited numbers of t-shirts are available. If you are interested please contact cperry@rtcwashoe.com

*calculated assuming 5 mile average commute and one round trip per registered rider

Please continue to support the businesses that help make Bike to Work and School possible in our community.
