What is ACHIEVE?
ACHIEVE (or Action Communities for Health, Innovation, and EnVironmental changE) is a nationwide effort to build healthier communities by promoting policy, systems, and environmental change at the local level that will reduce the risk factors for chronic disease. ACHIEVE is a collaboration between five national organizations and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Washoe County was one of only 40 communities designated as ACHIEVE sites nationwide.
What will ACHIEVE do in Washoe County?
First, a leadership team of influential policy-makers (called the CHART) was assembled. Next, an assessment of Washoe County’s readiness for policy, systems, and environmental change related to chronic disease was conducted (called the CHANGE Tool). In 2010, a total of 17 sites in Washoe County were assessed as part of the CHANGE Tool process, including worksites, healthcare providers, schools, community-based organizations, and the community-at-large. From this assessment, a Community Action Plan (or CAP) was developed that outlines the policy changes that need to be made to make Washoe County a healthier community.
What will ACHIEVE accomplish in Washoe County? Washoe County ACHIEVE has identified the following policy, systems and environmental changes:
- Customize a Model Healthy Food Plan for Washoe County
- Incorporate obesity prevention strategies as a priority of regional and local planning boards
- Develop a Model Preschool Wellness Policy
- Develop a Model Out-of-School-Time (OST) Wellness Policy
- Launch a community engagement initiative for parents and families related to child wellness
- Assist at least two worksites, two community-based organizations, and two preschool and two OST providers to adopt a nutrition or physical activity policy
- Expand the role of the Washoe County Chronic Disease Coalition
Proposed policy changes are to be implemented by 2012
